Karen Ann Stafford (Krader) Obituary
Karen Ann Stafford (Krader), 64, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 16, 2025, at the age of 64 at Penn State Health Hampden Medical Center. Born on March 13, 1961, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Karen was a proud member of Cumberland Valley High School’s Class of 1979. She lived a life filled with warmth, love, resilience, and radiant energy.
Karen was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in her early twenties, yet she faced every challenge with unwavering determination and a spirited “can do” attitude that inspired all who knew her. She had a lifelong passion for animals, music, and the beauty of ornamental horticulture.
Her journey into horticulture began while helping her first husband run his landscaping business, CI Lawn and Garden. In 1987, they opened Gregg’s Nursery in Mechanicsburg, where her love for plants and nature truly blossomed.
Karen found immense joy in the outdoors. Whether she was tending to her garden or swimming in her pool, she embraced the simple pleasures of life. Her beloved pets, Bootsie the cat and her dogs Pavlov, Princess, and Lilly—were constant companions and a source of great comfort.
She is survived by her husband, Roland Stafford; her children, Cassandra Nailor, Chase Carignan, and Carra Carignan; her stepchildren, George and James Stafford, Amanda Carlson, and Alexandra Schmidt; and her cherished grandchildren, Skylar and Ellie Buchanan, Laurel and Layla Carlson. She is also survived by her siblings, Kathleen Frey, Richard Krader, and Timothy Krader; and her father, John Kensek. Karen was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Kensek.
Karen’s generous heart, infectious smile, and joyful presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving her.
The family would like to thank the staff at Penn State Hampden Medical Center ICU for their exceptional care and support during Karen’s final stay.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the National MS Society.
All are warmly invited to gather, share memories, and honor Karen at her celebration of life gathering which will be held on Saturday August 16th at Crossroads Community Church in Mechanicsburg at 2pm. This will be an informal event filled with love, laughter and memories. Attire should be casual and comfortable. Feel free to bring a story, photo or memory to share.
