TMI Events from 3/28/1979

This was an article in the Carlisle Sentinel from this past week. "30 year anniversary of TMI events beginning on 3/28/1979" It brought back some memories for me. We didn't know if we should stay or go. I remember someone mentioning TMI in their profile. Some classmates are no longer in the area so they forgot this was a major event that occured in our senior year.

I don't think I glow any longer. So far I've survived TMI :)

I remember when it was all going on that we weren't allowed to walk outside from the 9th grade building to the high shool we had to take the tunnel. Some people didn't even go to school for a day or so around the actual event, I remember some people being completely freaked out and some people not so much. My family stayed but I know lots of people who went away for a few days!

I remember Three Mile Island - it happened on my 18th birthday and I was supposed to get tickets to the Billy Joel Concert but he cancelled! My family stayed, we aren't alarmists. Bummer, I never did get to see him in person. Went to the Hall & Oats concert later instead, but it wasn't the same! 8)

I have fond memories of the TMI accident. I applied for a summer job at Roadway and was required to have a back Xray taken before being hired. I found out about the accident when I exited the building (after the Xrays were taken) and heard the sirens. They could have saved a few dollars and just taken the films outside and held them in front of me.

When I saw the TMI anniversary mentioned on the national news last month, out came the stories to the family again! I, too, remember how they told us not to go outside unless absolutely necessary, and to use the tunnel. How ridiculous in hindsight! On Saturday I was working at Elby's on Carlisle Pike. No one was in the restaurant, and the employees were standing around watching everyone with their station wagons and campers, loaded and heading out of town down the Pike. We couldn't leave until the manager got ahold of Mr. Davenport, the owner, who had left with his family to the Poconos! We shut down around noon (if you remember, Elby's never closed). On Sunday my family went to Ft. Mead, MD, because my father worked for the National Weather Service, which had closed the office and moved to the regional office! I remember being so upset because for the first time in years our class was going to get to graduate on time due to no snow days, and then 3 days for TMI! But they didn't make the seniors make it up, and we graduated on schedule! FYI, I have always been accused of glowing. And my seniors (students) don't even really know what TMI is when I mention it.

Wow your discription just brought back some vivid memories! I went to the movies the night before TMI accident and saw "The China Syndrome" a movie about a nuclear meltdown in California!!!! Yes I was scared and really mad that they wouldn't let us go home and get out of town!

Maybe 10 years from now we'll all be falling over dead just because Gruber didn't let us go home! ha ha ha

I don't really remember anything else about it though.

I think the kids at Chernobyl Technical High School class of 1986 had it a little rougher than us.....
